    What is Amarone della Valpolicella?

Amarone della Valpolicella is a special red wine from the Veneto region in Italy. The wine is known for its unique production method, resulting in a wine with a powerful and full flavor. The name "Amarone" means "the great bitter" in Italian, referring to the wine's dry character. Amarone della Valpolicella is often known for its full, powerful, and complex taste, with aromas of ripe cherries, plums, and chocolate. This wine has a high alcohol content (14%-18%), giving it excellent aging potential.

    Appassimento method

A defining feature of Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG is the appassimento method used during the production of the wine. In this process, the grapes are dried to increase the concentration of sugars and aromas. This method adds unique characteristics that set Amarone wine apart from other wines. How does appassimento work? First, the grapes are hand-harvested. To meet DOCG status, the wine must be at least 45% Corvina and at least 5% Rondinella. Amarone wines may also contain Molinara, Negrara, Forselina, and Oseleta. After harvest, the grapes are dried in a well-ventilated space, a process that can take 3 to 4 months. The drying concentrates the flavors and sugars, resulting in a complex wine with a higher alcohol content. After vinification, Amarone must age in barrels for at least 2 years. This aging adds additional complexity and depth to the wine.

How long can you store Amarone della Valpolicella DOCG?

Amarone, with its unique characteristics, is an excellent wine for aging. The wine is full-bodied and has a high alcohol content. The length of time Amarone is aged has a significant impact on the wine’s flavor development. A young Amarone, which has been bottled for less than 5 years, is very approachable, with aromas of dried fruit, chocolate, and spices. Most Amarones are best enjoyed when they have been aged in the bottle for 5 to 15 years. During this period, aromas of tobacco, leather, and earth develop. Amarones of high quality, or those aged longer in oak, can be aged for up to 20 years. The tannins soften completely, and flavors of ripe fruit, honey, and oak become more prominent. The wine then takes on an elegant and refined structure.
