Where Does Chianti Wine Come From?

Chianti comes from the Tuscany region. The Chianti area lies between the historic cities of Florence and Siena and is one of the oldest and most renowned wine regions of Italy. The region is famous for its hills, olive groves, and vineyards that offer ideal conditions for the Sangiovese grape, the basis of Chianti wines.

Which Grapes Are Used in Chianti?

The main grape used in Chianti wines is the Sangiovese grape. Other grapes that can be used in Chianti include Canaiolo, Colorino, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. To refine the flavor of Chianti, only a small amount of these grapes is typically used. In general, the wine must contain 70%-80% Sangiovese to be officially recognized as Chianti wine.

    How Is Chianti Made?

As mentioned earlier, Chianti is primarily made from Sangiovese grapes, which are harvested in late summer or early autumn. After the grapes are crushed, fermentation takes place, during which the grape skins remain in contact with the juice to add color and flavor. This is often followed by malolactic fermentation to soften the wine. Chianti typically matures in oak barrels, with the aging period varying depending on the style. The final product is assembled, filtered, and bottled. Chianti must meet strict regulations to satisfy quality standards.

    What Does Chianti Taste Like?

When drinking a Chianti, the first thing you'll notice is its fruitiness. Flavors of cherry, raspberry, and strawberry stand out. The wine has a fresh, lively acidity that balances the fruitiness. The tannins are medium to high, giving the wine a solid structure. Additionally, Chianti wine contains aromas of spices such as clove and pepper. In aged versions, flavors of vanilla and toasted wood may also be present. This makes Chianti a versatile and balanced wine, perfect for pairing with various dishes.
