    What is Montepulciano?

Montepulciano is a red grape variety that originates from the Abruzzo region in Italy. Today, this grape is widespread in central and southern Italy and is even the second most planted indigenous grape variety in the country. The Montepulciano grape is easy to grow and is known for its resistance to diseases, although it thrives best in a Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights.

Montepulciano wines are characterized by a ruby red color and aromas of red and black fruit. Notes of cherries, plums, and blackberries are often prominent and are sometimes complemented by spices, tobacco, or even a hint of chocolate. The wine is generally known as approachable, with its smooth character and soft tannins, making it popular with both beginner and experienced wine drinkers.

    DOC Wines

Montepulciano has several DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which is a quality standard indicating strict regulations regarding the production and origin of the wine. The most well-known DOC wines with Montepulciano are:

    • Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC: The most produced Montepulciano DOC wine, originating from the Abruzzo region along the Adriatic coast. This wine must contain at least 85% Montepulciano grapes and has a minimum aging period of a few months.
    • Rosso Conero DOC: This wine comes from the Le Marche region and must also be made up of at least 85% Montepulciano grapes.
    • Rosso Piceno DOC: Also from Le Marche, but this wine is a blend of Montepulciano and Sangiovese.

For Rosso Conero DOC and Rosso Piceno DOC, there is no minimum aging requirement, except for the Superiore or Riserva versions. These designations mean that the wine has been aged longer:

    • Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC Superiore: Minimum 2 years of aging.
    • Rosso Conero DOC Riserva: Minimum 2 years of aging.
    • Rosso Piceno DOC Superiore: Minimum 1 year of aging.

Due to the variety in production and aging, Montepulciano offers a wide range of flavors and styles, from young, fruity wines to complex, aged variants.

    What to Eat with Montepulciano?

Montepulciano is a very approachable and versatile wine, making it perfect for a variety of dishes. It is often said, "What grows together goes together," and that definitely applies to Montepulciano. This wine pairs excellently with Italian dishes that feature tomatoes, such as a classic Italian pizza or pasta with tomato sauce.

Montepulciano wines also pair well with creamy dishes, such as risotto or chicken with a creamy sauce. If you have a Superiore or Riserva, consider pairing it with red meats, such as lamb or rib-eye, or even game dishes, which complement the wine’s more intense flavors.

Want to drink Montepulciano with appetizers? That works perfectly too! Prepare a charcuterie board with aged Parmigiano Reggiano or try some aged Gouda. Complete the board with soft, aged prosciutto.
