    What is Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noir is one of the oldest and most well-known grape varieties in the world. Originally from Burgundy, Pinot Noir is now found in many corners of the world. Due to its thin skin and sensitivity to climate and soil, this grape is particularly able to reflect the terroir. Generally, Pinot Noir wine is known for being fruity and elegant, often considered accessible. Pinot Noir typically contains hints of cherries and raspberries, with a light earthy undertone. It is a wine with a light to medium body and soft tannins. Pinot Noir can be found in all kinds, shapes, and price ranges. Did you know that Pinot Noir can also be used in champagne?

    Pinot Noir or Spätburgunder?

The name Pinot Noir is derived from the French word "pinot," which refers to the cone-shaped grape clusters, and "noir," meaning dark, which indicates the color of the grapes. In Germany, Pinot Noir is known as Spätburgunder, which means "late Burgundy." This name refers to the grape's origin in Burgundy. The word "Spät" refers to the late ripening of this grape variety. However, late ripening is not the only challenge when cultivating Pinot Noir. This grape is known to be one of the most demanding varieties to grow. Due to its thin skin and compact clusters, Pinot Noir is particularly susceptible to diseases and rot. However, when grown in a region with the right climate, it can develop into an extremely elegant wine.

What can you eat with Pinot Noir?

Pinot Noir wines are known for their fruity aromas with earthy undertones. Thanks to these earthy notes, Pinot Noir pairs excellently with dishes featuring mushrooms. For example, think of a creamy mushroom risotto. Poultry with a fruity sauce also complements Pinot Noir well. If you’re having Pinot Noir as an aperitif and looking for matching cheeses for your cheese platter, choose soft, creamy cheeses like Brie or Camembert. Want to highlight the earthy notes of the wine? Go for a rich Gruyère or Comté.
